Poem 212:

Cabin in the Woods

Forgotten in the Woods

——————–

Forgotten in the woods
lies a cabin amidst the forest trees
hiding in the shadows
of another time, of days now spent

her home once decorated with cheer
her children banged her doors
and clamored with joy
but she was happy to have them
amidst the forest floor

time now affray
she waits for another day
when her children once again
remember her youth, of time spent together
in the cabin hiding in the woods.

Rocky Shores Redux

——————–

Poem 208:

A Dirty Little Railroad

——————–

Time
a dirty little railroad
hidden in forest trees
not knowing where you’re going
or where you’ve been
one day you arrive
all alone.

Forgotten
in the midst of the forest,
amid life’s battles and frays
was a childhood friend and loved ones dear
somewhere along the way,
a heart grew weary.

Before
that ole train pulls in,
invite someone to join you,
the heart now hollow, fill  with love
and when you finally step off,
do so, with a friend.

Poem 207:

Prayers that flutter along

——————–

Noticed only by the creator’s hand,
broken songs, like our prayers,
oft flutter along, seemingly unheard,
steps winding nowhere,
steps that wind without grace.

Without the morning sun,
a heart has no song, notes
playing without a melody,
broken promises and shuttered dreams
scattered upon prayers
that just flutter along.

Forgotten though they may be
a broken prayer will find its melody
in the creator’s warm embrace,
and in the mourning doves coo
find again its place
and yield to sunlit rays.

Poem 201:

The Room Remembered

——————–

With watchful eyes silently attending
the room remembered her guests that day
the hammer and steel of a nation to be laid
I remember said the room
sacred truths held by all, truths
written upon a parchment scroll.

in time storm clouds gathered
wars would emerge, with great regret
claimed the lives of many who had met
years continued, years of toll,
hammered out rules to live by, rules of law
to guide a nation that was yet.

though in silence to remain,
until time fades from view
I remember, said the room
that day now long past, the day
the Declaration of Independence
was signed within these walls.

——————–
Standing amidst hollowed walls
their assemblies gathered there
of a nation to be, of time that was yet
a time when the liberty in men’s hearts
was set upon a scroll

Poem 206:

Roses from a Summer Fallen

Roses from a summer fallen
arise in sprays of a fountain mist,
reflecting quiet moments in the storm,
tidal waves waiting within the spray.

for the silence not heard,
the tidal waves that await
remind the rose that winter
also resides, within the mist.

A Mexican worker collects turtle eggs to be re-buried in a protected pen. Photo by Diane Thayer, used by permission

By the Sea

——————–

In the moons soft glow
the turtle wades ashore
to begin life’s journey
for her eggs held within

in the dead of night
while others do sleep
her nest will be made
the eggs to be laid

in the sand by the sea
she kept her promise to the shore
a lasting mark, amidst the sands
grains of life held within
a circle begins again.

Poem 182:

Lady Liberty

——————–

Within Lady Liberty burns an eternal truth,
a solemn truth against which tyrants
in night’s darkness shall ever rage
for in their blindness is the light
they can neither comprehend
nor prevail.

the light she holds, is born in not just one
but in all her children
born this day and in days to come,
the present forged in days now past
a virtue held oh so dear.

and should night arise
before the work is done,
she holds the torch to mark the way
a guiding light to all that come
saying quietly, here, here you may stay
to find the freedom you hold so dear.

——————–
Within the Lady is truth eternal
a solemn dignity
embraced by all her children, past and present,
of which the tyrant
can neither understand nor prevail
it is the light a despot cannot see.

Poem 200:

Forbidden

——————–

Forbidden by day
the firefly hides within morning light
there to slumber until the night

And though veiled within the light
when the sun fades, and the moon begins her ascent
they emerge to dance in our dreams
our mind to explore

dreams, the firefly hidden by a daily hustle
a rush to work, a rush to play
ever emerge, like the stars at twilight
mark the coming of the night

Poem 123:

Fountain Reflection

Rise Again from the Fall

——————–

Woven in the fabric of time
awaits the measure of our birth
of those that fall, some that crawl
a lonely mountain path, or storms that pass

The knowledge they seek,
is to find the measure of the soul
to remove from sight,
the awful struggles clothed in night

In that twilight abyss
seems so dark its easy to miss
that while all do fall, the gardener lays
but one measure to the day

The rod by which he prunes
is the faith to get up,
yet continue to fall
to rise again from the fall

And though we ponder anew
why a loving father
does not extend a helping hand,
when we ever so often fall

His hand is there to find
it’s just that in this estate
he trusts you more than you
and gave you strength to rise from the fall

He too once walked the earth
knows what it is to fail,
to stumble in the night
yet rise again by morning light

Each is the measure of the eternity
that lies just behind the wall

While all shall stumble
the measure of an endless state
stands waiting there, for each to rise
the anointed to walk through her gate

He trusts you more than you
and knows you will rise from the fall
now his hand you may fully take his hand
arise to an eternal state.

The Duck Poem

——————–

The tyrant said to the slave
stand here, and await my call

no, said the duck, no slave am I
for what you see is but a reflection of my dignity,
my soul is free, and never belonged to thee

the chains you placed upon me, sir, cannot bind
for what you thought and claimed
was never to be, an illusion of
your soul, not of eternity

Poem 196:

Grasses

the Grassy Shore

——————–

I met a smile today
as I walked along the grassy shore
that chased away the shadows
from the heart, and brightened the path
I had chosen to explore

Some ways down, in the distance
hidden in a face that was yet
a growl was lurking, waiting
to steal the sunlit ray
found in the beauty of the bay

I would not be deterred
and continued the walk,
determined when I met the growl,
I’d share the smile that I met today
along the grassy shore

And to my surprise
the growl began to glow
and that awful face, that gnarly face
shed its haze to reveal to my surprise
was my own, worn this morning, along the bay

——————–
the wonder of the smile met today
exchanged dark snarls
for those of a sunlit bay

Poem 195:

Dancing in the Waves

——————–

In golden rays scattered upon the shore
I met a stranger dancing in the waves
with joy in every step, his face smiled
with radiant glow

His smile tore me from the abyss
that filled my heart, the sadness felt,
as I walked alone the path
set by the bay

He said but one word, dance,
that I too should dance amidst the waves
and welcome the sun as it gave birth
to a new day

the water and wind awakened my soul
whispering quietly that I too should dance
and welcome the smile hidden within the soul

Little Boys & their Dreams

——————–

Shadows cast in morning light
sing tales with great delight
of ghosts & goblins slain in the night.

When sleepy eyes awaken,

silence marks remnants of the night
in the shadow that was a dream
the goblins were slain.

When Spring Awakens

——————–

Christmas ornaments now set aside
the fires warm glow now burns low
soon to give place to spring rains
where in the warmth of dying embers
spring buds begin their ascent,
ever eager to grow

in the midst of life’s flurries
the glow from within exclaims
the garden remains, the dust from the sun
sprinkled in morning dew
flowers waiting, begin to grow
sunrise waits upon the hill
winter embers burn low

the Tempest Storm

What means the tempest storm

Walking Backwards in Time

——————–

Walking backwards in time
a line is drawn, but never straight
hills and fields, ripples and stones
shape the valley of our fate

Solitary days and sleepless nights
replace moments of tender, joyful care
when passions distilled,
as leaves and petals floating on air

The road covered in frosty morn
of youthful years now well spent
slides along, another trail to emerge
where spirits merge, then struggle
the two to become as one

In winters storm to remain
until she too, reaches heaven’s gate
there her companion find once again
she knows in heaven, he does wait

Poem 183:

Five without Wings

——————–

Five without wings
who never learned to fly

Reckless indifference
walks a beach with life in tow
an ostrich with her head in the sand
who cannot grasp, another’s need at hand

Bait and switch giggles with a smile
then gives just a little twist
You look around wondering
where it is, you will land

The big house syndrome
after all, we all face challenges
words that speak loud and clear
they never walked a desert trail
looking for a helping hand
just a morsel that a mouth might fill

Patronizing tolerance
runs the great race that all might see
their knowledge and innocence
yet in the dark of night,
hear not the plea of their own cry
needing others to fill their light

It won’t happen to me
this I understand
as the stars pass by
in twilight, each will know

All born of fear
all afraid to let go,
to understand that God’s good hand
is upon all, in this his holy land

Only after we conquer fear
can we ever know
the butterfly who floats on wings,
wind and carriage of the earth,
is but a search
for the canopy of our birth

For truth floats on wings
not of mortal hands
for without wings
they cannot fly

The Lamp Post

A Nightly Serenade

——————–

A cacophony of sound and sight
where adventures begin every night
sounds to battle, cries of love
emerge from hidden truths
from within a hidden light
dreams are born in the night

each with a story to tell
like a firefly, going hither, going there,
appearing only to disappear
the story hiding in their soul
lies in their starry flight
a cacophony of the night

Poem 176:

The Lone Marine

——————–

The old marine
buttoned up his coat
for the winter cold
and long journey home

As he strolled along the path
a lone dandelion
swayed gently in the breeze
bathed in the moons eerie rays

As he lingered for a moment,
he thought about time now gone
and noticed the grass just as green
as the day he left, so long ago

A lifetime of choices
a young heart was to make
& though he sought harmony
found instead, the warrior he must be

——

His journey home marked time
that he had served, time well spent
yet the voices of lives lost
ever traveled at his side

Few of his friends chose the trail of war,
but turned not aside
for home and family they fought
each remembered, waiting patiently
in eternity

Van Gogh – Starry Night

Never Write a Bad Poem…

——————–

If I should choose to never write a bad poem
I guess, perhaps I would never write again
but what would I do with these thoughts
should I paint the air with starry nights?

But no, Van Gogh I’m not
but if I do not write, the words will cry out
so tonight I will put pen to test,
and see if the poem will give them rest.

The words are children that tell a story
of things that arise in dreams,
reflections that fill a starry night
with fables & heroes dancing in twilight.

Lingering-Shadows

Lingering Shadows

——————–

Silent like a song that only one may hear
in the eerie night, hide the things I fear
a howl, a growl, a shadow near

Fingers that linger upon a window rim
in summer storms and winters rains
lingering in shadows, hiding from the light

Or is it just the rain coming down
creating life’s little frown
for in the distance, a speck I see
in the glimmer of the sun

As the rainbow begins to speak,
her smile rests upon me now
alas tis Halloween Eve,
and a poem written, just for fun 🙂

That Little Kiss

——————–

Do you ever wonder if trees smile,
or the maples in my yard,
do they understand?

That while I rake their leaves
it would be ever so nice

when their leaves do fall!

One drops her leaves
and with silent hush
waits for me to finish

Then her sister with a great rush
paints the yard bright yellow
ever so quickly in the breeze

Aspen Path

Life’s Journey

——————–

When I have passed the age of man
and laid the body aside
will my children remember an old man
or one who once held their hand?

Will the friend I did offend
remember the times we laughed,
forgive an ole fool and laugh
once more, for the two of us?

When the journey has passed
will all remember the times we played
or perhaps worked in a desert sun
I wonder if they will.

I think I shall like to ask them
when they too have said goodbye
and meet them in courts on high
and laugh with each once more.

Mountain-Meadow

Silver Lake, Brighton, Utah

Mountain Meadows

——————–

One morning an angel said
you made the day seem like night
when all around you is truly bright

For what a great sin, a loss to you and me
to not see the story of a starlit night
or miss what the morning meadow brings,
to hear a bluebird sing

Within your heart, soft strings yet asleep
eagerly await, the beauty they forgot
enjoy the gift so very bright
before it too, slides softly into night

Morning shadows bring a song
I’m sure the Creator wrote,
of wondrous things, when robins
begin to sing

From within gentle strings,
let your heart truly sing
as the meadow begins her song
remember the joy that it brings

Perpetual Rose

White Roses
The masquerading rose
within one’s soul
oh how thorns prick
and take their toll.

The blooming petals
so temptingly sweet
fraudulently grown
placed at feet.

Alas; Roots grow deep
within the ground
what once was there
will come around.

Touch of velvet
soft essence treat
yet without the thorns
are not complete.
